Q: how do I care for my hand dyed yarns?

For the best results I recommend hand washing in cold/room temperature water, without the use of bleaches. Dry flat in the shade and you can use a cool steam iron gently if needed. Please refer to your iron instructions to ensure you are using the correct setting and only lightly steam the item as appose to heavy ‘ironing’ which will flatten the fibres.

Some minimal bleeding may occur in the first wash, this isn’t a fault in most cases it is just a differences in water mineral content, water PH levels and detergents used.  Wash the item separately to avoid any transfer. If you are wanting to combine light and dark colours please do a test swatch.

I do use machine washable bases where possible so if you do happen to accidentally machine wash your project it won’t felt on you. If I have used non machine washable yarns it will be specified on the listing.

Please also note the yarn can not be used directly from the skein it will need to be caked with a yarn winder or hand wound into a ball before use.

Q: what do you use to dye with?

I use industry respected acid dyes for protein fibres

Q: Can I get more in the same colour?

Just like with commercial dyers, hand dyed yarn will have batches. I can not guarantee that yarn from different batches will be an exact match.

The majority of my colour ways are one of a kind batches so please snap them up before they disappear.

Q: What is different about hand dyed yarns?

Hand dyed yarns give you the opportunity to work with yarns in colours usually not available on commercially dyed yarns. Hand dyed yarn can have beautiful textural like colour ways such as mottles, freckles, speckles of a different colour in odd places, these are not faults simply the charm of hand dyed yarns. I personally adore freckles and dye in a way that encourages them.

Q: Why are your yarns different prices?

There are a lot of factors that go into pricing. The natural bases I dye with are purchased at different prices. Some techniques are also use more resources and time. These are just some of the things that influence the final asking price of a particular yarn.

Q: Where your yarns yarn sourced?

Wherever possible I source my yarns in Australia. I like to support Australian small businesses. I purchase direct from the White Gum Wool farm in Tasmania and from the Wangaratta region in Victoria. The Majority of my superwash yarns I purchase from the UK. The merino component of these yarns is sourced from Australian farmers.

Q: Do you work with acrylics?

A: Unfortunately no. I am actually sensitive to man made yarns and I am unable to work with them.

Q: Can I order a colour you don’t have in stock?

At the moment Mahogany Turtle is unable to offer custom dyed services.
